Signs and Symptoms of Dysphagia


Short Term
• Shortness of breath
• Change of color
• Spiking temperature
• Chest Infection
• Wet, gurgly voice
• Choking or coughing during or after swallowing
• Difficulty managing salvia (drooling, coughing)
• Residue or pocketing of food or drink in mouth after swallowing
• Effortful chewing and swallowing
• Nasal regurgitation

Long Term
• Unexplained weight loss with anorexia
• Recurring chest infection
• Frequent episodes of high temperatures
• Dehydration
• Hunger
• Lengthened mealtime
• Avoidance of certain foods
• Refusal to eat/fear of eating and drinking

Signs and Symptoms of Aspiration

• Eyes watering
• Gagging
• Change in respiratory rate
• Change in lung sounds
• Facial grimacing
• Chest pain
• Reddening of face
• Difficulty breathing
• Coughing
• Gurgly voice quality
• Spiked fever
• Chronic copious clear secretions
• Audible breathing
• High or low back pain
• Delay in swallowing
