This 24-hour relay race adventure spanned from Fort Collins to Steamboat Springs reaching into Wyoming and distancing 200 miles. With 36 legs to the race and 10 people on the team, each team member ran 3-4 legs of the race, with legs averaging 5.6 miles in distance. Running through sun, night-time darkness and rain, team members reached elevations of 10,500 feet.
Nic Wagner says of the race, “I was only in Colorado for four days, but I made a lifetime of memories and friends. I was physically, mentally and emotionally challenged more than I probably have ever been, but I also saw determination win over sheer exhaustion and wouldn’t have traded it for anything. This relay race might have been one of the coolest, most epic and trying things I have ever done.” Nic ran a total of 24 miles during the race.
The course took athletes over two mountain passes and through three national forests.
Long-distance relay racing is a form of self-supported adventure racing. Teams are out all day and all night dealing with everything the course throws their way. This particular race is part of the Road Less Traveled Relays.
Way to go, team!
